No Sports Betting in the State of California

Author Mathias Jensen Published Published 19/03-2019

A recent sports betting initiative was pushed forward in California to try and change the landscape of betting in the Golden State. However, a recent release now suggests that this initiative was not able to move forward as it did not receive enough signatures.

This means that sports betting will not become legal in California any time soon, but it could happen again in the future.

    No Sports Betting for CA

The initiative to try and push through sports betting was filed in 2018 by a group calling themselves Californians for Sports Betting. They wanted to place an initiative on the ballot in 2020, which would allow residents to vote on it. If it passed that stage then it would have become law.

However the initiative required 623,000 signatures in order to qualify for the ballet, and they simply didn’t get that many. In fact, they didn’t get any signatures at all! However it seems that this was the intent all along, with a spokesman for the company announcing that they never “advanced to get a single signature” and that the point of the move as to start a “conversation in California gaming on what is the right path forward.”

On the surface it seems like a fruitless endeavor and it may turnout to be just that, but if it does start a conversation on the future of sport betting in the state of California then it could prove to be worth the time and the effort.

    The Initiative

The failed initiative suggested that there should be a compromise between card rooms and tribes in the state, one that would allow both of them to offer sports betting, while continuing to allow the tribes to offer other gambling options, such as luck-based games like roulette.

If passed it would have changed the state constitution, which currently prohibits most forms of gambling and places very tight controls on sports betting in particular.

There was also suggestions that the initiative simply wouldn’t have received enough donations and that any future titles would fail for the same reason. However, it could be a move in the right direction, and only time will tell if that is the case.
